According to the American Nurses' Association: Since 1974 National Nurses Week begins each year on May 6th and ends on May 12th, Florence Nightingale’s birthday. Also in 1974 May 12 was designated International Nurses' Day. As of 1998, May 8 was designated as National Student Nurses Day, to be celebrated annually. And as of 2003, National School Nurse Day is celebrated on the Wednesday within National Nurses Week each year.
And my thoughts:
The Nurse Without a word, without speech, there is much that you say "Don't be sad, don't be afraid, it's going to be okay," With just a look, with just a look. With empathy, with sympathy, you make your patient's day You strive to make the darkness and the fear go away With just a look, with just a look.
Without a word, without speech, there is much that you express Even when you're busy, even when hard-pressed With just a smile, with just a smile. If your patient's world is a great mess You find a moment somehow, to show kindness
With just a smile, with just a smile. Without a word, without speech, there is much that you pass on Always a silver lining, always the coming dawn
With just a touch, with just a touch. You banish with just a gentle hand upon A shaking hand, a furrowed brow, a frown With just a touch, with just a touch.
Happy Nurse's Week, to all the nurses out there, and to the nurse that lurks inside of each of us.
